I'm going to have to upgrade my entire rig anyway so waiting a bit and going full new machine isn't out of the question really. If it's worth it I'd just wait a few more months.

You could go for a new setup now based on a 7600, then just upgrade the CPU once the new Zen 5 CPUs land...

Agreed, read rumours elswhere that suggest that performance of top-end Zen5 parts may be rather soured by a dearth of bandwidth. Which may explain a separate rumour that Zen6 will include a substantial rebuild of the memory controller.
Does make me think that 8-core X3D Zen5 will be a great place for gamers to perch on for several years - as 16core will be bandwidth starved, and even Zen6 with an improved memory controller will do little more than de-starve a 16-core CPU - which will have marginal beenfit to gamers anyway.
Presuming Zen5 arrives with DDR5 6400 (native) speeds, an 8-core part should fly for gaming workloads.

I did this coming up to about 12 months ago now. Made the move to AM5, got the board I wanted and memory, and stuck in the 7600 as a stop gap. Paid £215 for the 7600 and actually, it has been a really good CPU. Still holding its price, looks to be about £190-£200.
I saw it for £154 4 days ago.

The 7600 is surprisingly fast, I'm in no hurry to upgrade yet as it's still doing what I ask if it easily.

It is. I went from an 8 core to this 6 core and it's been impressive. Noticed no issues with gaming or anything.
Sigh, wish people wouldn't post this. I used a 7600, it chokes in Cyberpunk. CPU is literally at 100% all the time, horrible frame drops.

Hmm I must be playing a different cyberpunk to you.
With an Nvidia card you want a 7800X3D. The 65 watt chips are fine for anything RDNA based.

Horrible frame drops and lag spikes in the majority of built up areas. Meanwhile, smooth as silk on my 7700 and 7950x3d and 13900k chips.

I remember that. Was that before the 2.0/2.1 patches? I think the demands on the CPU have increased a little. I believe so! I've not played the expansion yet, it's on my to do list! Will likely be after 5090 release, so further demand on CPU should be fun to see, good old Tom's Diner

Yeah probably...
It’s probably more to do with the RT CPU overhead, I don’t know if AMD has a big RT CPU overhead. Disabling RT will tell just how bad the CPU overhead is.

No, the Nvidia driver uses a lot more CPU cycles than for example AMD and possibly Intel just to exist, so wherever there is a CPU bottleneck the Nvidia GPU reaches it much sooner than an AMD GPU, to such an extent that a much slower AMD GPU can be much faster than a normally much faster Nvidia GPU, we are talking 30 - 40% just because the Nvidia driver chews up that many CPU cycles.
