I don't like going out for dinner.

Maybe becuase I do a lot of cooking at home, I am no professional chef, but can knock up some quite good stuff. Also I think it doesn't help having a family of 4 with one older child basically an adult.

But with the odd exception, there is very little that I enjoy about it.

It's the cost more than anything. I could actually understand the enjoyment a bit better if you were single going out with mates etc, just having to pay for yourself. But if we go out, it's effectively 3 adults and one child, any form of pretty "standard" pub meal with drinks, that's already £100. Even Wetherspoons with a few drinks now £50. Anything fancier, forget it.

But not just that, almost without fail, the food you get I think I could have just made the same at home, for 20% (or less) of the cost. Maybe it's just as I live in the middle of nowhere and choices are limited but, any form of pub food, I can make better for cheaper. Any type of "chain" resturant are usually abysmal, I had a meal in a "Carluccio's" once in Peterborough and I had the seafood linguini, and no joke it was just some boiled seafood, on plain spaghetti with a very small amout of some sauce over the top, and was charged, what, £15 for that? Im sorry but if you find that kind of thing acceptable you need your head examined. But any of chose big chain places, are all pretty dire. Most indian/chinese/italian/etc restaurants and pretty dire. Amercian BBQ type places are ok, but expensive, again, I can do that at home.

Added to that, invariably they screw up something in your order, then you have to ask them to sort it out, which delays everything or makes things awkward as every one wants to be polite and wait for your (correct) food to turn up. It's awkard getting their attention for drinks, you have to wait, you have then try and hound them down to pay the bill, then often they try and add a "service charge" on top, and you have that further awkardness of saying no. Don't foget you are supposed to be paying for an "enjoyable experience".

I do not understand why people go out to a pub for a sunday roast. Making a roast isnt technically difficult in the slightest, and I have literally never had a roast dinner anywhere, I couldnt make better myself, and they NEVER give you enough gravy.

Anything fancier? No thanks, you pay a lot of money for a small portion, pretentious rubbish.

There is the odd exception, a few times many years ago there was a thai resturant in Peterborough and the food there was really good, and outside of what I could do myself, it closed down now unfortunately. I have been to a few Turkish places that basically give you a really posh kebab and are not usually too expensive, also pretty decent portions, although those are getting expensive these days.

But generally, no, it's not for me.

If you're going to chain 'restaurants', especially Wetherspoons, you aren't getting quality food. But i agree, it's expensive for a family to dine out these days :(

But look at it from another POV, it's a chance for you to not cook, no washing up etc, it's about the ambiance and been able to relax and socialise with your family and get out of the house.

Yeah, never actually feel fully comfortable eating out and always resent paying for the privilege.

Would rather cook at home and have mates round.

Unless I'm on holiday of course, then I love it. :)

It would seem Tim Martin saw your post and got in touch with the mods :o

While I do agree partly, especially with the point about chain restaurants and being able to cook better at home. That's why I usually only tend to go to places that are either so cheap that it doesn't matter like Wetherspoons, or the other end of the scale to really nice places where it's more of an event rather than just "going somewhere to eat," and is usually with a larger group of people.

Admittedly I don't have any kids so it'll either be just me and the girlfriend or a group of friends.

When I worked in Reading I loved going out to eat. Not at the chain restaurants but at all the small out of the way places doing their traditional dishes. Now its a pain to drive somewhere for disappointing good that can be replicated at home far cheaper.

I agree to some extent. I also have a family of 4, and meals are expensive. I am also a decent cook, and often know I could cook the food better. I would normally use higher quality ingredients as well for example we only eat free range meat at home. The budget chicken they use in Thai/chinese/Indian restaurants is slightly repulsive to me.

However there are some foods that are hard to do as well at home, for example pizza if you don't have a proper pizza oven. It is also nice to be lazy sometimes so we go out to eat about once a month.

Yeah I agree with the suspended op.
Its sooo expensive and I just don't get my moneys worth in "enjoyment".

Fancy food is wasted on me. I'd rather a pie, roast potatoes and some veg at a basic (but nice) pub. Anything fancier than that and it's a waste.

Don't mind using my tesco vouchers on pizza express type chains though. But otherwise, they very much aren't worth full price.

I tend to just go with my Partner for a meal, usually mid week on Annual Leave and try to use Taste Card.

Since Covid it’s not as good, and Friday, Sat and Sun are now excluded.

But 2 for 1 at a fair few places.

Two Mains, 2 Drinks is like £25… We once asked for Water and had two large Pizza’s for £14 but we felt judged. :p

Agreed though, expensive with kids my brother has 3 children so even McDonalds must cost a fortune.

We only eat out once in a while and even then its normally breakfast or lunch. I cant remember the last time being out for an evening meal, tbh I don't find the hustle and bustle of a busy restaurant in the evening that relaxing these days. If we are out with the dogs we might pop in somewhere but living fairly out in the country it seems a lot more effort than it should be.

There is a world of difference between eating at Pizza Express type of restaurant and going fine dining. There is a world of good food out there if you look for it.

Although taking kids to good restaurants is generally a waste of everyone's time.

Fine dining is mega expensive nowadays.

I don’t mind it now and again but gone are the days of it being a regular occurrence.

We could afford it but just don’t feel it’s worthwhile to do it frequently now.

It shouldn't just be about the food. It should be also about the experience. Not just fine dining. But getting out of the house. Going into town, Having a look in around the local shops etc.. Popping into a nice friendly Cafe or Restaurant and just relaxing with friends/Family etc.

Town centres are hit hard, The high street as we knew it is dying and being replaced with charity shops or just left empty.. If we dont support local the future looks a bit bleak.

Biased...Yes. I own 3 Hospitality sites. But I love my town and want to support its regrowth.

Use it or lose it....

I guess my point came across wrong but good time going out doesn't have to be fine dining, but shouldn't be some place where you wipe your feet on the way out with feral kids charging about.. that's no fun at all.

seems like the Gavroche is off the bucket menu now (margin not big enough for him in current uk situation)

but agree with the OP the value for money equation doesn't balance any more versus eating at home,
for pub type meals they try and provide too much variety at the expense of ingredients and preparation quality (supermarkets sell uwave meals afaik)
animal welfare issues, too, few pubs show any acknowledgement of those.
strict no drink driving now, also means that having wine with a meal is out which would be part of pleasure - taxis are horrible.

Maybe if you are very well of you can view the expenditure similar to foreign work trips I've had in the past, where someone else is paying, such that value equation is less present, but you are often eating on your own.
