Hi any idea what I'm doing wrong, I've put a post into the random image thread, url is this: https://ibb.co/znt3s9r

When I wrap it in IMG though it does something weird:

Ah thanks, I thought it needed to be the url of the page to avoid hotlinking. Is this basically then hotlinking but from imgbb or whatever and that is OK because those sites wouldn't host an out-of-size mage? Or am I missing some nuance of difference with the hotlinking that is banned?
So that url is to the page containing the image, not the image itself.

The IMG tags are expecting the full path which in your case is https://i.ibb.co/mDPnJZG/C8-DA3-D03-8278-4-D5-F-A688-E1573-E47710-C.jpg

Copy that URL and try again :)

The hotlinking rule is intended to stop people from inserting images hosted on other websites - i.e inserting an image hosted on the BBC website or inserting an image hosted on the Microsoft website.

You can hotlink images hosted on websites intended to host images such as Imgur, ibb etc.. That's fine and cited as a specific example in the hotlink rules.

"You may post images providing they are hosted by a well known image hosting website, such as imageshack, photobucket etc.. Directly linking to images on other sites that are not expressly for that purpose (known as Hotlinking) is not permitted."
